After the 2016 US Presidential Election, I asked two questions:
What the hell happened, and how the hell did it happen?
Hope was shattered on that awful night in November 2016 and shortly after, I started this project and labeled it ‘Untitled Political Book’. Over the last two decades, politics has become a terribly disgusting word, especially to women who talk about it and challenge what’s wrong in this world. But I wanted to look back over the last twenty-eight years, from the hope of the 1992 Presidential Election to now to try and figure out where it all went wrong.
And figure out what we can do to make it right.
In 1992, I turned eighteen and voted in my first Presidential Election. It was time for a change, for a rock ‘n’ roll presidency. Eight years later, those hopes were dashed to pieces on the waves of impeachment and a stolen election. Then a change happened again, this time with a war and a recession that in turn led to another change. Hope again begin to grow but it never bloomed despite eight years under the best President of the twenty-first century (so far, anyway). But that hope was blown to hell on November 3, 2016 when another election was stolen.
In the four years since that awful November night, I have asked myself how in the hell did the last four years happen and why. It’s taken me a long time to figure out how to write about the last twenty-eight years of American politics from a seriously-jaded yet fired-up Generation X female voter. And now with a pandemic raging and the world at the brink, I’m trying to figure out here in words why things keep intersecting again and again, and crashing and burning in the process… and if we can figure out how to stop that crash-and-burn once and for all.
